Peaty means full of peat, or like peat. A peaty bog is wet ground packed with that dark plant material; your boots come away black. A peaty smell is earthy and smoky, like a wet field with a small fire in it. You will hear the word a lot with whisky: a peaty whisky carries that smoke because peat was burned while the drink was being made. Some people love it; some find it too much, as if they were licking an ashtray. Water from some moors is called peaty too — it can look brown, like weak tea. It is an ordinary describing word, not rude.
