PBS is the Public Broadcasting Service, a television network in the United States. Its job is to show good programmes, not to make a profit like the big commercial channels. You will not see loud product ads in the middle of a PBS show in the usual American way. The money comes from viewers who give, from the government, and from large companies that help pay for a programme. Two names people still tie to PBS are Sesame Street and Masterpiece Theatre. Though actually, those company messages — “brought to you by…” — can feel a little like quiet ads, and some famous PBS shows now also appear on paid streaming services.
