A payout is a large amount of money paid out to someone, usually in one go. You hear it when an insurance company pays a claim, when someone wins a competition or the lottery, or when a court case ends and money is handed over. Newspapers like the word because it sounds big. You would not call your monthly salary a payout; that is just pay. Though actually, companies also use it in a drier way: a dividend payout is money sent to shareholders, and it may not feel dramatic at all. The verb behind it is pay out — to give out money.
