Payday is the day your arrive — the day the money from work actually lands. For some people it is every Friday. For others it is every two weeks, or once a month, on a set date. It is a very ordinary, slightly happy word: people plan rent, bills, and a nicer meal around it. Informal, used by everyone who gets paid, not a technical office term. Though actually it has a shadow. A payday loan is a small, often very expensive loan that you promise to repay on payday; that phrase is common in English news and it is not a kind word. Payday itself is still clean and everyday. Older factory talk made it sound like a single weekly event; office life has stretched it to whatever day the transfer comes.
