Pavlovian describes a reaction you cannot help, because your body learned it by repeating the same pairing again and again. Ivan Pavlov (1849–1936) was a Russian scientist. He won a Nobel Prize for work on digestion, but students remember him for a simpler, famous experiment with dogs. Each time he fed them, he sounded a bell (or a tone) first. After enough repeats, the sound alone made the dogs' mouths water, even with no food yet. That learned, automatic link is a conditioned reflex: a physical reaction you cannot control, caused by training or by what you have lived through. So a Pavlovian response today is any habit like that — the phone pings and your hand goes to your pocket; a school bell rings and you stand up. It is a slightly educated, psychology-flavoured word. Though actually, people use it loosely for any strong habit, even when nobody trained them on purpose. And it is not a reflex you are born with, like blinking: a Pavlovian one had to be learned.
