A paunch is a fat, round stomach, especially a man's. If someone has a paunch, his belly sits out over his belt. People say it with a small smile or a small sting: it can tease, and it can hurt. It is informal, a little old-fashioned, and we almost always use it about men — often men who sit a lot, or who drink a lot of beer. You would not usually call a baby's tummy a paunch. The belly itself is the paunch; the person who has it is .
