A patisserie is a shop that sells cakes and fine pastry, especially in the French style — tarts, éclairs, little cakes that look as if someone dressed them. The same word can also mean those cakes themselves: 'a box of patisserie'. In English it sounds fancy; a bakery is the everyday shop for bread, and a patisserie is the one you visit when you want the cakes to be the point. We borrowed the whole word from French, which is why the spelling keeps the extra letters and why some people still say it in a French-ish way. You will see it on shop signs more than you will hear it in very simple conversation. Though actually, in many towns the 'patisserie' is just the cake counter of a café, not a separate temple of pastry.
