Paternity is the fact of being a particular child’s father, or the live question of who that father is. A paternity test tries to settle it. The word is formal and a bit legal; in warm family talk people just say “he’s the dad.” English also uses it in compounds that still sit on this same idea: paternity leave is time off work because you are the father of a new baby (in Taiwan that leave is usually called 陪產假).
