    A paterfamilias is the man treated as head of a household: the father who, in the old picture of a family, speaks for everyone and is owed respect. English borrowed the whole Latin phrase: (father) + familias (of the family / household), literally “father of the household.” In Roman history and law it can be quite serious — that man held real legal power over the people in his house. In ordinary English now it is often slightly humorous or old-fashioned: a way to point at a father who the meat, makes the speech, and acts as if he runs the place. It is almost always a man; that is built into the word. You would not call a mother this, even if she is clearly in charge.
