1. 1

The patella is the small, flat, roundish bone at the front of your knee — the one you can feel with your fingers, that slides a little when you bend your leg. Doctors and biology teachers say patella; almost everyone else says . If you hurt it, a hospital may talk about a fractured patella or a dislocated patella. It is a Latin clinic-and-classroom word, not a kitchen-table word. Though actually, the Romans used the same word for a small pan or dish; the bone is shaped a bit like a shallow plate, which is why the name stuck.
