A pastille is a small, round sweet that you suck and let melt in your mouth. Some are only sweets, with fruit flavours; some carry a little medicine for a sore throat or a cough, and you buy those at a pharmacy. You do not swallow them like a pill. The word is more at home in British English; many Americans say lozenge instead. It sounds a little old and gentle. Though actually, fruit pastilles in Britain are often soft, sweets, so the medicine kind and the sweet kind sit under the same name.

組成From Late Middle English pastil, from Old French pastel, probably from Latin pastillus — a small bread roll, or a little sweet to freshen the breath or take as medicine. That Latin word may come from pāstus (“fed”) + a small-ending, from a verb meaning to feed.
