Before computers laid out magazines, someone sat with printed columns of text and pictures and stuck them onto a large sheet so you could see the whole page. That sheet is a paste-up: a paper dummy of a page, made with glue, that shows how the book or magazine will look when it is printed. Printers and magazine people used it to check that a title sat in the right place, that a photo was not covering a word, and that the page felt balanced — then the real pages were made from it. It is a workshop word, not a sitting-room word. You still hear it in print shops and among older designers; younger people doing the same job on a screen may never say it. Though actually, some studios still call the last paper proof they stick on the wall a paste-up, even when the work was done on a computer.
