A parvenu is a person who has suddenly become rich or powerful after coming from a low social place — and the word is not kind. It is an insult about class. It says: this person did not grow up with money or high standing, and now that they have it, they do not quite belong, or should not act as if they do. You meet it in novels and in rather cold talk about society, not in everyday chat. Though actually, the sting is often about manners as much as money: people reach for it when someone new to wealth shows off, tries too hard, or does not know the old rules. In French, where English borrowed it, it simply meant “someone who has arrived.” English kept the arriving, but added the sneer. It can sit in front of a noun too (a parvenu family), with the same cool look-down.
