1. 1

A partridge is a , brown bird with a short tail. People hunt it for sport and cook it for food, especially in the countryside in Europe. It lives on the ground more than in trees, and it is smaller and rounder than a , which has a long tail. English speakers who never see one still know the name from the Christmas song about a partridge in a tree — a slightly odd picture, because partridges are not really tree birds. In a city classroom it is mostly a story-and-song word; in food writing and hunting talk it is an ordinary bird name.
