Participial is a grammar word. It means “using a participle,” or “in the shape of a participle.” A participle is a verb form, often ending in -ing or -ed, that can work like an adjective: a smiling child, a broken window. A participial phrase is a group of words built around that form: “Walking home in the rain, she missed the bus.” You meet it in textbooks: participial adjective, participial phrase. Outside class, people just say the -ing form or the -ed word. It is not the same as participate (to take part), even though the two sit near each other on the page.
