Partake is a formal, slightly old-fashioned way of saying 'take part in' or 'have some of'. You mostly hear it about food and drink - if you 'partake of the food', you eat some of it. It always needs a small word after it: you partake IN an activity, or partake OF a meal. It sounds polite and a little formal, so you'll meet it more in writing, invitations, or jokes than in casual talk.
