Parry means to block or turn aside an attack, especially in sword fighting or boxing, by moving your weapon or arm at the right moment so the hit does not land on you. From that physical fighting image, English also uses 'parry' for words: to parry a question means to avoid answering it directly, often by giving a clever, indirect reply instead — like blocking the question rather than answering it head-on. Politicians often 'parry' hard questions from reporters this way.
