Parquet is a floor made of many small, flat blocks of wood fitted together in a pattern — often squares, diamonds, or a (like fish bones laid side by side). You see it in old European rooms, dance halls, and fancy apartments. The pattern is the point: it is not just long boards running one way. Though actually, English also borrowed a theatre sense from French: in some older American usage, the parquet is the front part of the seats nearest the stage. For most the floor is the meaning that matters. It can be a verb too: to parquet a room is to put that kind of floor in. The word still feels French; people often say it par-KAY.
組成Borrowed from French parquet. In French it is parc “enclosure, park” plus the little ending -et, so originally a small enclosed space — then the wooden floor of that space.
