Parnassus is a high mountain in central Greece. In ancient Greek stories it was a holy place: Apollo (god of music and light) and (god of wine and wild joy) were said to belong there, and so were the Muses — the goddesses of art, song, and learning. That is why later writers used Parnassus as a picture-word for the world of poetry itself: to “climb Parnassus” is to try to be a poet. So the name is both a real place on the map and a literary nickname. It is a proper name, always written with a capital P.
