A parka is a thick, warm jacket with a hood, made for cold and wind. The hood is the point: it covers your head, and often has fur or a fur-like trim around it to keep your face warm. People wear parkas in winter, in snow, or anywhere the wind bites. It is a normal clothes word, not fancy. Though actually, the first parkas were not fashion coats. They were work and hunting coats in the far north. Today’s parkas can be heavy outdoor coats, or lighter city jackets that only copy the look.
