Parings are the thin, narrow bits you cut off the outside of something. If you peel an apple with a knife, the long thin skin that falls away is apple parings. If you cut your nails, the little pieces that come off are nail parings. The word is almost always plural: we say parings, not one paring, unless we are being very exact. It feels a little old and tidy. Many people just say peelings or scraps. Though actually, parings are not just any scraps. They are the thin layer you sliced off, not chunks you chopped.
