A parenthetical remark is something you drop in while you are already talking or writing about something else — a little extra that explains, names, or adds a side thought. In writing it often sits inside brackets ( ), or between dashes or . In speech it sounds like a quick aside you could lift out without breaking the main sentence. Though actually, people also use parenthetical as a noun for that extra bit itself: “just a parenthetical.” It is a school-and-writing word; in casual talk people say “by the way” or “just to add.” The spelling looks as if it had to do with mums and dads. It does not. It belongs with parenthesis — the brackets — from Greek for placing something in beside the main thing.
