    A parakeet is a small, coloured bird with a long tail. People keep many kinds as pets; you have probably seen one in a cage without knowing the English name. Parrot is the wider family name: big birds like are parrots too, but they are not parakeets. Parakeet is the small, slim, long-tailed sort. Some English speakers say budgie () for the little Australian one that is so common as a pet; that is one kind of parakeet. The word is only the bird.
