Paprika is a red powder you cook with or shake over food. It is made from dried sweet peppers, ground fine. The taste is usually warm and a little sweet, not the sharp bite of hot — though some tins are hotter than others, so you will see “sweet paprika” and “hot paprika” in the shop. Cooks use it on meat, stew, eggs, and potatoes, and it is famous in Hungarian cooking. The colour is part of the point: it turns a dish that deep red. Though actually, people often grab “ powder” when the recipe wanted paprika; you still get red food, but the heat and the flavour are not the same.
