A paperboy is a boy whose job is to take newspapers to people’s houses, usually early in the morning, often on a bicycle, and leave each paper at the door. For a long time this was a typical first job for teenagers in some English-speaking countries. There are papergirls too, and some people now say paper carrier so as not to assume the child is a boy. Though actually many places no longer send a child down the street with papers — adults in vans do it, or people read the news on a phone — so the word can feel a little old-fashioned. Everyone still understands it. Paper here means newspaper, not a blank sheet for writing.
