A papaya is a large tropical fruit. The skin is usually green or yellow-green; inside, the flesh is orange or pink and soft, with many small black seeds in the middle. People eat it fresh, drink it, or cut it into salad. You meet it in hot countries, and in shops that sell tropical fruit. In Taiwan it is an everyday fruit, not a rare treat. The English word came from Spanish, and Spanish took it from Lokono, a language of the Caribbean. is a sister word — English borrowed the name twice — though actually in the United States today often means a different fruit that grows there, so the two names can mix people up.
