Long trousers with wide legs that then become tight at the bottom, around the lower legs or ankles. This is an old clothing word. In the 1800s it named that cut in ordinary dress; now you mostly meet it in history, costume, or fashion writing, or as a slightly word for old-looking trousers. Though actually, the everyday American word pants (trousers) was cut down from pantaloons. The name comes from Pantalone, a comic old man in old Italian plays, who wore long tight trousers. His own name goes back to a Greek saint, Panteleimon; the word then passed through French into English.
