A pane is a single sheet of glass in a window or a door — the flat piece held by the frame. A window may have one big pane or many small ones. If a ball hits the window, it is often one pane that cracks, not the whole wall. The word is quiet and practical, a bit old-fashioned next to just saying “the glass.” Though actually, the same spelling is used on a computer for a section of the screen (a pane in a program window), as if it were another panel you look through. That is a later office-software sense of the same word. It is not pain, the hurt feeling, which only sounds the same when you say it.
組成From Middle English pane, pan, from Old French pan, from Latin pannus, from Proto-Indo-European *peh₂n- (“fabric”). The idea moved from a piece of cloth to a piece, then to a piece of glass. Doublet of pagne and pannus.
