Panama is a country on a thin strip of land — an — that joins Central America to South America. Costa Rica sits on one side, Colombia on the other. The capital is Panama City, which is easy to mix up with the country because they share the name. What most people know Panama for is the Panama Canal: a opened in 1914 that lets ships pass between the Atlantic and the Pacific without sailing all the way around South America. That is why the name turns up in geography class, in news about trade, and on maps. A few million people live there. Though actually, a “Panama hat” is the pale straw hat people picture with the name, but those hats are made in Ecuador; they were shipped through Panama, and the name stuck. In English we capitalise it as a place name: Panama.
組成Borrowed from Spanish Panamá, of unknown origin. Possibly from a Chibchan language such as Kuna, or another indigenous language of the region (such as Cueva, which is barely attested and is now extinct).
