The pampas are huge, rather flat in South America, especially in Argentina and nearby countries. Think of open land that goes on and on, with grass, wind, and cattle — not forest, not desert, not farm fields cut into neat squares. English nearly always says the pampas, as a place, the way we say the Alps. It is a geography word, a little specialised, but not technical once you have the picture. Though actually, people sometimes use it loosely for any wide , but the real name belongs to that South American plain. It is not the North American prairie and not the African ; same kind of landscape, different part of the world.
