If your heart palpitates, it beats quickly, and the beats are not steady — too fast, too hard, or jumping in a strange pattern. You can often feel it in your chest or throat. Fear, love, coffee, running up the , or a real heart problem can all do this. Writers sometimes stretch it a little: a person may palpitate with excitement, meaning the whole body seems to throb. In everyday talk, though, people more often name the feeling than the verb. A patient will say “my heart is racing”; a doctor may say it is palpitating. It is a slightly formal medical verb, still at home in clinics and careful writing.
