A palomino is a horse with a golden or cream body and a white, or almost white, mane and tail. It is a colour, not a breed: palomino horses can come from several kinds of horse. People keep them for riding and for shows because the colour is so striking in the sun. Though actually, English speakers sometimes stretch palomino to mean that same gold-and-cream look on other things, but the home of the word is horses. In Spanish the name comes from paloma, a dove — a soft, light colour. In English it stays a horse word, a little special, not an everyday farm word like mare or pony.
