A palmtop is a very small computer that fits in your hand, named the same way as a laptop (on your lap) and a desktop (on a desk). The word was common in the 1990s, when people carried little computers that were not phones yet — machines you tapped with a stick, or typed on a tiny keyboard. Though actually, almost nobody says palmtop now. We say phone, tablet, or instead. You will still meet palmtop in older manuals and in comparisons of computer sizes. It names a size and a time more than a machine you can buy today. It was never the same as a laptop: a laptop is bigger and sits on your knees.
掌上型電腦。台灣當年也說 PDA、掌上電腦;現在幾乎都改口講手機和平板。
