A palmist is someone who says they can tell your character, or what will happen to you, by looking at the lines on the palm of your hand. Another everyday name is palm reader. Palmist sounds a little more like a job title. You find palmists at fairs, night markets, and in shop windows with a painted hand on the glass. Many people treat it as fun, not as science; the idea that they “claim” to know the future is doing real work in the meaning. It is not a school word or a hospital word. The person is a palmist; the art they practise is palmistry.
