    A pallbearer is a person who helps to carry the coffin at a funeral. There are usually several, walking on both sides. Sometimes they only walk beside it, and a cart or other people take the weight — though actually the old job was to hold the pall, the heavy cloth that covers the coffin, not always to lift the box itself. In many families the pallbearers are close relatives or friends. It is a serious, formal word. You use it about funerals, not as a joke.
