Palladium is a soft, silver-white metal. Its chemical symbol is Pd. It sits with platinum in the group of precious metals that do not rust easily. People mix it with gold and silver, and they use it to cover an object with a very thin layer of metal. Car factories use a lot of it in the part that cleans the exhaust. In a jewellery shop you may meet it inside “white gold,” which often needs palladium (or another white metal) to stay pale.
Though actually, in old books palladium can also mean “a thing that protects a city or a country.” That sense comes from a statue of the goddess Pallas that was said to keep Troy safe. Chemists named the metal after Pallas, an asteroid found two years before, itself named after that goddess. So the two meanings meet in a name, not in daily talk. This entry is the metal.
