A paleontologist is a scientist who studies fossils — ancient bones, shells, plants, and other traces of life kept in rock. Dinosaurs made the job famous, though actually many paleontologists work on shells, leaves, , or tiny sea creatures, not only dinosaurs. This person is not the same as an . study what humans made and left behind; paleontologists study ancient life, including life from long before humans. American spelling is paleontologist; British is palaeontologist. Paleontology is the subject; the paleontologist is the person who does it.
