    An informal, friendly word for a friend — used casually, like "buddy" (they're old school pals). It's also sometimes used to address someone directly, and depending on tone, that can sound friendly or a little or threatening — "Listen, pal, that's not how it works."

Borrowed from English Romani pal 'brother, friend', from Romani phral, from Sanskrit bhrātṛ 'brother'.
