It came to Britain from Kashmir and other parts of South Asia. In the 1800s, mills in the Scottish town of Paisley wove huge numbers of with this look, so English speakers started calling the pattern after the town. Younger people may just say “that swirly print”; people who , sell cloth, or talk about vintage fashion are more likely to say paisley.
