Painterly is a word from art talk. If something is painterly, it has the look or the habits of painting — loose brush marks you can see, colour laid on in a way a camera would not copy, a surface that feels made by a hand. People use it about pictures, and also about films, photographs, and design that seem to borrow that painted quality. It does not mean “covered in paint,” and it does not just mean “done by a painter.” A very flat, tidy, poster-like picture might be painted and still not feel painterly. The word is fairly specialist; you meet it in reviews and classes more than in the street. In ordinary talk, people might say it looks like a painting instead.
