Pah is a little burst of sound, like spitting something nasty out of your mouth. People say it when they strongly dislike something — when they feel it is dirty, silly, or not worth their time: Pah! What rubbish. It is old-fashioned and a bit like a play. You will meet it in novels and on stage more than in a shop. Younger speakers almost never use it in real talk unless they are joking or copying an old voice; they might say , or just pull a face. Though actually, it is not a word you change for tense, and it is not a polite reply. It is only the noise of “I do not like that.”
