A pagoda is a tall religious building, often Buddhist, with several floors and a roof at each level, the corners of the roofs often turning up. English speakers usually mean this stacked-tower shape in East or South-East Asia. You see pagodas in pictures of temple grounds in China, Japan, Myanmar, and sometimes Taiwan — though many Taiwan temples are a wide hall, not this tower. Though actually, in many of those places the pagoda is the tower standing in the temple garden, not the whole temple where people pray. English borrowed the word through Portuguese sailors, from South Asian languages, and in the end from ; it is not a Chinese word that English copied, even though you will see many pagodas in Chinese-speaking places. People once tried to tie it to Persian or to Chinese; that was a wrong guess. It is a calm, slightly travel-guide noun, not slang.
組成From Portuguese pagode (“Hindu temple, Hindu idol, pagoda coin”), from Dravidian words of respectful address to Hindu gods, idols, and their temples, including Malayalam pakōti (a Durga temple) and Tamil pakavati (Durga, Parvati), all going back to Sanskrit bhagavatī (“Holy One”, used for goddesses). The sound may have been bent by Portuguese pagão (“pagan”). Older books sometimes tied pagoda to Persian or Chinese; that was a mistake.
