Paddleboarding is moving across water while you stand on a long, wide board and push yourself along with a paddle. You stand (that is the usual picture today), look forward, and use a long paddle on the left and on the right, a bit like canoeing but on a board shaped like a surfboard. People do it on a calm sea, a lake, or a quiet river. It is a sport and also a holiday activity. The popular modern kind is often called SUP, short for stand-up paddleboarding; younger people and beach shops use that short name a lot. Though actually, older paddleboards were sometimes used lying down, paddling with the hands. If a class or a rental shop says paddleboarding now, they almost always mean standing up with a paddle. The word is simply the activity of using a paddleboard. It feels informal and outdoor, not classroom-formal.
