1. 1

Ozone is a type of gas. Its molecules are made of three oxygen atoms stuck together, instead of the usual two. High up in the sky, a thin layer of ozone protects us from the sun's harmful rays — people call this "the ozone layer." Near the ground, ozone is actually a kind of pollution and can be bad for our lungs. People also say the air by the sea smells "of ozone," meaning fresh and salty — though what they smell is not really ozone at all.
