Oxo is a British brand. An Oxo cube is a small hard square made from dried meat juices, salt, and flavour. You drop it into boiling water and it melts; the water becomes a brown, meaty stock for soup, gravy, or stew. In the UK the cubes have lived in kitchen cupboards for a very long time, and cookbooks often say “an Oxo cube” the way a Taiwanese recipe might just say “a stock cube.” The brand name became the ordinary word for that little square in Britain, the way some people say a tissue brand for any tissue. It is food-cupboard English, not science English, and not a word you will hear much in a Taiwan shop — though actually the thing itself is just a stock cube. People stretch “Oxo” a little to mean any cube of that kind, but on the packet it is still a brand.
