Oxfam is a British charity. The name began as a short telegraph address for the Oxford Committee for Famine Relief, a group that started in Oxford during the Second World War to send help to people who were starving. Today Oxfam works in many poorer countries: training in farming, school programmes, and medicine when there is a serious shortage. In the UK it is also famous for its shops, which sell used clothes, books, and other second-hand goods to raise money. “I got this at Oxfam” often just means it came cheap from a charity shop. It is a proper name, so it takes a capital letter, and it is not a general word for any aid group. Though actually the shops are what many British people meet first, the organisation’s older job is famine relief and long-term help overseas.
