1. 1

An oxcart is a simple cart — a wooden vehicle with wheels — pulled by oxen, which are big, strong cattle, not by horses and not by a motor. In the past people used oxcarts on farms and country roads to move grain, wood, and goods. Oxen are slow, but they are strong and can work on rough ground. You still see oxcarts in some places, but in most English-speaking countries the word now belongs to history, museums, and stories about old village life. It is a plain compound: if you know ox and cart, you already know the pieces. Do not picture a car; picture a heavy wooden wagon and the animals in front.
