Ow is the little cry people make when something hurts all of a sudden — a pinch, a knock, a stubbed toe. It is not a real sentence; it is a sound we write down. It is very informal, used by children and adults alike, often with an mark: Ow! It is close to ouch, which is a bit more of a full word; ow is shorter and sharper. You would not write ow in a formal letter. People also stretch it — Ow, that was stupid of me — when the pain is small, or even when they are only surprised. Though actually, in careful writing, oh (the surprise sound) and ow (the pain sound) are different, and mixing them up makes the feeling wrong.
