To overuse something is to use it too much, so it stops working well or it gets hurt. You can overuse a joke until nobody laughs, overuse a word until it feels empty, overuse a medicine until it does not help, overuse your voice until it is sore. Doctors talk about overuse injuries — pain from doing the same movement again and again, like a wrist from too much typing. It is a verb: they overuse it. It is also a noun: the overuse of plastic, the overuse of antibiotics. The feeling is usually a warning, not a compliment. Though actually, people sometimes say overuse when they only mean use a lot, even if nothing is broken yet. The tighter idea is too much, and it costs you. The over- here is the too-much kind, not the through-the-season kind you get in .
