An overture is the piece of music played at the very beginning of an opera or a big musical show, before the singing starts, that introduces some of the music the audience will hear later. Away from music, 'making an overture' means making a first friendly move toward someone, often to start talks or repair a relationship — like a peace overture between two countries.
